Research Farm Manager

Purpose of the role:

The Research Farm Manager will oversee and maintain research orchards to the highest horticultural standards. The successful candidate will be responsible for orchard development, maintenance, and daily operations, ensuring optimal growth conditions for avocado and mango cultivars. This role requires attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to work with research teams to support ongoing trials.

Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee orchard establishment, irrigation scheduling, fertilization, pruning, harvesting, and pest/disease control.
• Manage irrigation pump houses, storerooms, and farm equipment.
• Ensure accurate record-keeping and adherence to research protocols.
• Interpret research maps and standard operating procedures while collaborating with multiple research teams.
• Supervise a small team of research assistants and oversee staff development.
• Travel regularly within a 100km radius for orchard management, with ad hoc national trips from time to time.
• Maintain Health & Safety standards (ISO 45 001) and ensure compliance with farm regulations.
• Plan and manage budget and resource allocation.

Education:

• BSc in Agriculture/Horticulture or a related field (MSc is advantageous).

Experience:

• 3+ years of experience in agriculture, preferably tree crop production.

Behavioural Competencies:

• Strong orchard management and record-keeping skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Excellent communication skills (English required, Sepedi is an advantage).
• Ability to work independently, take initiative, and pay attention to detail.
• A valid driver’s license (with trailer towing ability).
• Knowledge of farm machinery, maintenance schedules, and safety procedures.
