About This Opportunity
A privately-owned successful and established company located in South Burlington, Vermont, is seeking a Controller to oversee the full range of accounting operations and ensure the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting across all functions, including accounts payable and accounts receivable.
Job Summary
The Controller will be responsible for managing the company’s accounting operations, including overseeing the preparation of financial statements, maintaining internal controls, and ensuring compliance with all accounting policies and regulations. Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will play a key role in guiding the organization’s financial strategy, preparing monthly financial statements, and managing the accounting team to ensure all financial activities are performed accurately and efficiently.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Oversee the day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring accurate reporting for Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and general ledger functions.
- Manage the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including variance analyses and account reconciliations.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable tax regulations and reporting requirements (e.g., 1099 issuance, sales taxes).
- Supervise and mentor junior accountants, reviewing journal entries and ensuring accurate financial data entry.
- Develop and maintain a system of internal controls to safeguard the company’s financial assets and ensure the accuracy of financial reporting.
- Assist with the coordination of annual financial audits and tax return preparation, liaising with external auditors and tax preparers.
- Ensure proper documentation and adherence to accounting policies and procedures.
- Analyze and streamline accounting processes and recommend improvements to increase accuracy and operational efficiency.
- Provide leadership in financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting, collaborating with other departments to support business objectives.
- Coordinate with other departments on more complex accounting projects and strategic initiatives.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the CFO or senior management
Desired Skills, Education, and Experience
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, or a related field.
- 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a managerial or supervisory role (public accounting experience is preferred).
- In-depth knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), financial reporting, and regulatory requirements.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to perform detailed financial analysis and resolve discrepancies.
- Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Self-motivated with a high degree of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and other Microsoft Office programs; experience with ERP systems (Vista) and AppFolio is highly desirable.
- Proven ability to lead a team, work collaboratively across departments, and communicate effectively with diverse levels of employees and management.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with changing priorities and challenges.
